As I move to DC I’m driven by two visions. I call them ‘OpenPress’ and ‘EnterPress’.
These are the two foundational ways of utilizing WordPress that I recognize. For me, they have ultimately become their own paradigm.
OpenPress is the utilization of WordPress as an open communications platform for journalists and governments. It is focused on all things ‘Open’: data, content, media, software, governments and ultimately, journalism (press). Specifically, it is focused on how leveraging open source technologies like WordPress can create a more ‘Open’ world.
EnterPress is the utilization of WordPress as an enterprise level application platform. WordPress is very ‘bottom’ heavy; it is terrific for beginners. This is an important asset, and should be expanded still. However, the platform is maturing and needs more mature communities to grow with it. The ‘Core’ community is fantastic for this, but is primarily concerned with the production and distribution of the core WordPress platform. There are several ‘advanced‘ communities that have also sprouted, but they continue to be bogged down by less than ‘advanced’ topics and conversation. The word ‘advanced’ is subject to interpretation, and from what I’ve noticed mostly means ‘the knowledge just beyond my horizon‘. My hope is that EnterPress will push the limits of ‘advanced’ discussion; in turn pushing the limits for the community’s growth. It may have to be a walled garden, but that is in the better interest of the greater community. If leaders can have a place to freely discuss difficult concepts without bikeshedding, WordPress overall (and all who use it) will continue to grow and prosper. This already happens in the Core community, online and at events, but it now needs an emphasis for 3rd parties.
In 2016, I’d like to start a humble meet up and online community to focus on each of these two, separately. I’d like to collaborate with local DC journalists to start a monthly ‘OpenPress’ meet up in Q1 2016. EnterPress will have to wait until at least Q3 2016, and may exist online only at first.
